Merdeka Coffee begun in 2001 as an idea of cooperation. The initial partners saw how Indonesian coffee production was benefiting neither the small growers, nor the end consumers in specialty coffee markets in the USA, Europe, Australasia or Asia. The early days were dominated by trips all over this vast country- meeting growers, talking with them and learning about the needs of not only teh growers, but their communities. A lot of coffee was sampled- some great, some good, some average some...well. Working with a group that had historically been given very little proved challenging but exciting. The founders passion for coffee was matched by their love of Indonesia- the culture and the people.
