Balfour Beatty Construction Forms Federal Group
Dallas, TX, December 04, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Building on its extensive experience with Federal projects, specifically in the Washington, D.C. area, Balfour Beatty Construction has formed a new business unit to target projects in the Federal sector nationally. The company has identified a five-year, $26 billion opportunity for new work in four target Federal agencies – the Department of Defense, Federal Bureau of Prisons, General Services Administration, and Department of Veterans Affairs.

Balfour Beatty Construction has managed construction on such high-profile projects as the Air Force Memorial, the National Museum of the Marine Corps, and the recently dedicated Pentagon Memorial, and has completed more than $1.3 billion in military housing since 2004. Among its current construction activities, the company has more than $300 million in two design-build services contracts with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Fort Lee, Virginia, is part of the team managing the $640 million new Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, and was recently awarded a $300 million Multiple Award Task Order Contract (MATOC) for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The contract covers construction at military bases in South Carolina, Georgia and elsewhere.

The Federal Group is based out of the company’s Washington Division in its Fairfax, Virginia, location. Leading the effort is Executive Vice President Leon Blondin, who has led the Washington Division’s business acquisition activities with the government sector. In addition to Blondin, other company leaders who are active in the Federal Group include Kent Long, Senior Vice President and Business Unit Leader for Federal Projects, Florida Division; Mark Konchar, Vice President, Washington Division; Retired Navy Captain Mike Blount, Vice President of Operations, Florida Division; and Shane Omar, Acquisition Director, Washington Division.

“Utilizing our extensive experience with Federal projects in the D.C. area,” said Chairman and CEO Robert Van Cleave, “our new Federal Group will help us identify and target Federal sector projects both within and outside our geographic footprint.”

The company expects that this expanded Federal pursuit strategy will capitalize upon success with one of its largest clients (the Federal government), provide opportunities for geographic growth and expansion, and provide insulation from some of the instability within the current private commercial market.
