ACSID Looks to Give the Boot to Cigarette Litter on Atlantic Avenue

The Atlantic City Special Improvement District has implemented a cigarette litter eradication program geared towards eliminating the proliferation of cigarette butts throughout the downtown district.

Atlantic City, NJ, November 07, 2009 --(PR.com)-- In an effort to reduce the impact of unsightly litter gracing Atlantic Avenue, the Atlantic City Special Improvement District (ACSID), in conjunction with Keep America Beautiful, Inc. (KAB), has implemented the Cigarette Litter Prevention Program along a designated portion of Atlantic Avenue between North Carolina and Kentucky avenues.

The ACSID secured a $500 grant from KAB and provided an extra $765 towards the purchase of six (6) 4.5 gallon steel outdoor cigarette urns. Heavy duty, weather-resistant and fire-safe, these urns come complete with a three-sided message center that will allow for point-of-display advertising of the Cigarette Litter Prevention Program along Atlantic Avenue.

This region was selected due to its high volume of pedestrian traffic and numerous “transition points,” areas where pedestrians frequently stop and congregate. Two ash receptacles are located in front of the bus shelters on the corner of South Carolina and Atlantic avenues at Center City Park. Two more ash receptacles are featured in front of the bus shelters on the corner of Tennessee and Atlantic avenues. The remaining two other ash receptacles are located on the south side of Atlantic Avenue: at the bus shelter in front of Valu Plus between South Carolina and Tennessee avenues, and at the bus shelter in front of the Sheen building between New York and Tennessee avenues.

The Cigarette Litter Prevention Program aims to reduce and/or eliminate cigarette butt waste along downtown city streets, such as Atlantic Avenue, through public awareness, education and participation. Also, 400 pocket ashtrays will be made available to the public at the ACSID’s Park Place Boardwalk Information Center.

In order to keep track of progress that is made is beautifying Atlantic Avenue, a Cigarette Litter Scan, which was developed by Keep America Beautiful, Inc., is conducted throughout the target area. This method includes taking a physical count of all cigarette litter on the ground and is a reliable and proven way to test whether the program is being properly utilized in the area. These scans are performed before the program is launched and after it commences. Periodic scans may also be implemented throughout the year to assess long-term impacts.

Local organizations, schools, public entities and neighborhood residents are welcome and encouraged to help in the implementation, education and participation of the Cigarette Litter Prevention Program. For more information regarding this program, please contact the ACSID at 609-344-8338.
