College Station, TX, January 13, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Ronald B. Kuppersmith, MD, FACS of The Texas Institute for Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery, today successfully performed his 20th robotic thyroid surgery at the College Station Medical Center in College Station, Texas. Crossing this significant threshold distinguishes him as the first surgeon in North America to be recognized by Intuitive Surgical (http://www.davincisurgery.com) for listing as a “Robotic Surgeon” in the area of thyroid surgery. He is believed at this time to have performed the highest volume of robotic thyroid procedures outside of the Republic of Korea. Because of his recognized expertise in thyroid surgery, patients have traveled from around the United States and internationally to consult with him and undergo surgery.

Robot-assisted or daVinci thyroid surgery allows Dr. Kuppersmith to remove the thyroid without any neck incisions, eliminating the traditional post-operative neck scars, while improved high definition three-dimensional visualization and more precise control of surgical instruments compared to standard or even “minimally invasive” techniques.

This innovative technique was pioneered in Korea by Woong Youn Chung, MD of Yonsei University College of Medicine and has demonstrated the potential to reduce the risk of damage to the laryngeal nerve and parathyroid glands. Kuppersmith spent time in Korea studying the technique with Dr. Chung, and has been invited to speak about the technique at multiple national and international medical conferences. He also has been involved in the development of training protocols for the technique.

Dr. Kuppersmith is president of the The American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) and practices full-time in College Station, TX.
