San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua, February 12, 2010 --(PR.com)-- After months of planning, San Juan del Sur “Howler” race organizers and local community businesses prepare to host athletes from Canada, the USA, neighboring Costa Rica and local participants for the largest adventure race series in the country. The 2010 off-Road Adventure Series kicks off with the 2nd Annual 2-Day Howler Mountain Bike Race on February 20, 2010.

Event organizers are utilizing the race series as a vehicle to raise $10,000 for local non-profit community partners, Communidad Connect and Fundaciόn Tierra, two non-profit organizations devoted to helping build the local community in and around San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua with social and environmental programs. Both organizations are contributing to the events by allocating staffing resources to ensure the events’ success.

Community businesses have rallied in supporting the events by sponsoring services, in-kind products and financial donations. “One of many reasons San Juan del Sur continues to be an attractive tourist destination is because the wonderful businesses in the area. With their generosity, the pool of prizes for race winners continues to grow.” said Larry Thraen, from Bodhin Adventure Services, the event organizer.

“To sweeten the sponsorship packages, we included race entries for local businesses that donated to the Howler with financial contributions. For each $100, businesses have the opportunity to sponsor three local riders, which helps create a sense of comradery with local business, as well as fun for local competitors.” said Thraen. To date, local businesses, Chica Brava, Nica Fun, Groupo Max, El Encanto, El Gato Negro, Pan de Vida, Aurora Realty, and North American Sponsors Sawtooth Adventures have pledged financial contributions. Other sponsors which have contributed in-kind products and services include, Villas de Palermo, Pan de Vida, Villa Isabellas, and Ruth Orbano Translation services.

The schedule of events for the “Howler weekend” consists of a short course criterion time-trail on Saturday, Feb 20th, beginning at 9AM, and followed by a 3PM short-course race. Sunday Feb 21 is the main event, challenging the 3 race categories for the series title and the $500 prize money.

“Cuban Luis” Contreas from Smoke on the Water will be catering both days’ events, and providing plenty of cool beverages during the anticipated warm race days. Bambu Beach Club will be hosting race day wrap-parties, showcasing racing highlights on the big screen and ocean-side drink specials.

With two weeks until race day, the event still needs volunteers, including course marshals for water stations, certified EMTs and drivers for support vehicles. All proceeds from the race will go towards Communidad Connect and Fundaciόn Tierra.
