The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery Names New Editor and New CEO

Needham, MA, March 09, 2010 --(PR.com)-- The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, Inc. announces two new executive appointments. Mr. Kent Anderson was appointed CEO/Publisher on January 4, 2010 and Vernon T. Tolo, M.D. will take office as Editor-in-Chief on April 1, 2010. Mr. Anderson and Dr. Tolo replace James D. Heckman, M.D. who is retiring after serving for ten years as Editor-in-Chief and CEO of The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, American Volume (JBJS).

Dr. Tolo has served as Chief of Orthopaedics at Children’s Orthopaedic Center in Los Angeles, CA since 1987. He received his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. His surgical and orthopaedic training was at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he also was Chief of Pediatric Orthopaedics for 11 years before coming to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. In 2001, Dr. Tolo was inducted into the Johns Hopkins University Society of Scholars. He has been President of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, as well as President of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America, the Scoliosis Research Society, and the Orthopaedic Section of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Tolo’s clinical practice is at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles and he has the academic position of the John C. Wilson, Jr., Professor of Orthopaedics at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California. He has been Deputy Editor for Pediatrics at The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery as well as a member of the Board of Trustees.

Commenting on his new role, Dr. Tolo states, “I consider it essential that JBJS continues to be the highest quality general orthopaedic surgery journal, in these days of so much orthopaedic subspecialization. Whether in print or electronic form, JBJS will remain in the forefront in educating orthopaedists both nationally and internationally. It is a wonderful honor to have been selected as JBJS editor and I am excited to meet the challenges and opportunities of my new position.”

Kent Anderson comes to The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery from The New England Journal of Medicine, where he worked for six years as Executive Director of International Business and Product Development and four years as Publishing Director for NEJM. Prior to that, Anderson was Director of Medical Journals and Professional Periodicals at the American Academy of Pediatrics. Earlier, he worked for divisions of Thomson Scientific and 3M. He has an undergraduate degree in English and an MBA. He is Editor-in-Chief of The Scholarly Kitchen, the official blog of the Society for Scholarly Publishing. He has served in various positions in STM publishing organizations, is a frequent speaker, and publishes the occasional scholarly article.
