New Report Shows BrightCom Telepresence Produces Half of Carbon Emissions of Air and Auto Travel

BrightCom releases new data demonstrating the carbon offset of its telepresence and video conferencing systems in comparison to air and automotive travel.

Huntington Beach, CA, June 25, 2010 --(PR.com)-- BrightCom, the performance leader in integrated telepresence and video conferencing solutions, announced today new data showing their telepresence and video conferencing carbon offset compared to physical air and automotive travel. The report found that BrightCom conferencing solutions produce half the amount of carbon emissions as using airplanes for long distance travel or automotive vehicles for short distance travel. The report also found businesses can save 20% per employee automotive carbon emissions if they encourage their employees to teleconference from home one day a week.

Recently a study was conducted by Verdantix, an independent analyst research firm, on financial and carbon reduction benefits of early adopters of telepresence in the US and UK. According to Sustainable Life Media, the study showed that “businesses that substitute some business travel with telepresence can cut CO2 emissions by nearly 5.5 million metric tons in total – the greenhouse gas equivalent of removing more than one million passenger vehicles from the road for one year – and achieve total economy-wide financial benefits of almost $19 billion, by 2020.”

BrightCom telepresence and video conferencing solutions, when compared with business travel via air and automotive transportation show a similar pattern of results.

BrightCom telepresence and video conferencing solutions are based on software driven, processor based, infrastructure and endpoints. The Visual Collaboration System (VCS) is the infrastructure in which BrightCom Lumina Telepresence solutions and ClearView Video Conferencing solutions connect to allowing businesses to broadcast high definition video, audio and interact with a full set of web conferencing functionalities. The VCS allows BrightCom endpoints to communicate to all other SIP enabled endpoints, remote desktops, remote laptops and web cameras via the web.

In their analysis, BrightCom used the following two scenarios to calculate the carbon emissions for air and automotive travel:

Air travel:
- One employee travels via airplane roundtrip from Los Angeles to New York City once every month or twelve times per year.
- In this situation, air travel gives off 27,804 lbs CO2 for one year.

Automotive travel:
- One employee traveling an estimated 25,000 miles per year, for local and regional travel (approximately 1-3 hours away from starting location).
- In this situation automotive travel produces 23,291 lbs CO2 for one year.

For the analysis of BrightCom’s conferencing solutions, BrightCom measured the carbon offset using the following standards:
- The amount of energy it takes to power a BrightCom Lumina Telepresence and ClearView Conferencing systems and the amount of power BrightCom headquarters uses for both electricity and gas in a scenario in which one BrightCom endpoint is always powered on.
- Because the VCS is able to connect remote laptops or desktops to conference rooms, this scenario will show that only one conference room system such as a ClearView CVC2042 is necessary to communicate to employees, business partners and customers in other locations.
- In this situation BrightCom Lumina Telepresence produces 13,068 lbs CO2.

To analyze this scenario further, BrightCom calculated how much the carbon footprint is reduced when one employee teleconferences from home one day a week using the BrightCom VCS to connect from their home office desktop or laptop. If one employee reduces the use of an automobile for travel by 20% or one day each work week, then the amount of carbon saved equals 4,658.20 lbs CO2 per year. If a business encourages each employee to take one day a week to teleconference from home, then the amount of carbon being saved increases exponentially.

All carbon emissions are calculated with the Terrapass Carbon Footprint Calculator.

According to Bob McCandless, CEO of BrightCom, “As the studies show, many businesses have been able to reduce their carbon footprint with telepresence and video conferencing. BrightCom’s technology, because of its flexibility from its software driven and processor based infrastructure and endpoint configuration, allows businesses to communicate from a wider variety of dispersed endpoints and therefore minimizes the amount of business travel and costs associated with travel such as carbon emissions.”
