Tallinn – One to Watch in 2011 According to WhichBudget

Tallinn has been chosen as a ‘European Capital of Culture’ for 2011 and WhichBudget.com, a leading flight search and destination finder, predicts that this beautiful medieval city will feature even more highly on the UK travellers radar next year as a city break destination, thanks to the introduction of new Ryanair routes in January 2011, departing from London, Luton and Edinburgh.

London, United Kingdom, December 25, 2010 --(PR.com)-- WhichBudget has put together a list of Top 10 tips of what to see and do plus how to get the most out of your budget around the cobbled streets of Tallinn.

1) Download the tourist board’s excellent audio guide (www.audioguide.ee; €3.90) to get your bearings.
2) Make your budget go further and get great value for money on public transport and entrance fees to the main museums and cultural sights with a Tallinn Card (www.tallinncard.ee). From €24 for 24hrs.
3) For a panoramic view of the city and its terracotta roofs take a walk up to the top of Toompea Hill followed by a visit to the fairytale Toompea Castle.
4) Then go underground and explore the extensive network of the Bastion Tunnels of Tompeea, which date back to the 17th century.
5) For shopping head to St Catherine’s Passage in the Old Town for shops and open studios selling traditionally crafted hats, glassware, jewellery, ceramics, hand painted silk, quilts and more.
6) Take a dip in the city’s oldest public bath, Kalma Saun (www.kalmasaun.ee) or head to Pirita beach.
7) Don’t miss the Tallinn Christmas Market in December and January for traditional gifts and stocking fillers. Best buys include hand-knitted socks, gloves, hats and jumpers.
8) Estonia produces some excellent beers and the annual Ollesummer Festival (6-9 July, 2011) offers no less than 70 varieties. The Saku Brewery (www.saku.ee; 10 km from Tallinn) is one of Estonia’s oldest and offers year-round tours and beer tasting.
9) Many restaurants offer päevapraad (lunch time specials) providing a hearty meal for a good price. Komeet (www.kohvikkomeet.ee) is one of Tallinn’s newest eateries providing a range of traditional meals, open sandwiches and cakes. However, located in the new Solaris Centre, it is the views over the Old Town which really make it worth a visit.
10) For a fabulously hip hotel try the 14th century, 37-room Merchant’s House (www.merchantshousehotel.com) located in the city’s Old Town. Doubles cost from €95 per night.
