Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences Harnesses Mosaic Technology to Meet Evolving Needs of Students
Salem, NH, February 16, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Mosaic Technology, a leading expert in virtualization and data storage technology, today announced that Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (MCPHS) is transitioning to a virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) for its campuses in Boston, Worcester, and Manchester, N.H. The VDI architecture will enable Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences to streamline is data center resources, reduce infrastructure costs, and transform the way both students and teachers access and share information. In addition, the college deployed a new integrated disaster recovery solution and storage system that will improve its business agility well into the future.

“Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences is committed to the most progressive standards in teaching and learning. That approach also applies to technology,” said Tom Scanlon, chief information officer, Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. “Mosaic Technology allows us to focus on not just IT maintenance, but technology innovation. The response from students and faculty has been overwhelmingly positive. As the first institute of higher education in Boston, we are proud of our leadership in advanced learning and are excited to continue our heritage with technological innovation.”

As a long-term customer of Mosaic Technology’s, MCPHS selected Mosaic to supply and integrate VMware’s View with their new Dell EqualLogic next-generation iSCSI storage system, disaster recovery solution, as well as various other software components. Mosaic was able to simplify the deployment of MCPHS’s new physical and virtual infrastructure and management associated with desktop deployments, providing an excellent student experience, coupled with a foundation optimized for performance and availability.

Mosaic designed and deployed the VMware and Dell EqualLogic solution to help the college bring together the silos in the data center to one unified architecture using industry-standard technologies. Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences is the oldest institution of higher education in the city of Boston. With over 4,000 students spread across its geographically diverse campuses, the college is continually challenged to enhance the research and learning experience. The new system allows students in the Boston campus to securely access their personalized desktop from any workstation.

For the IT department, the new VDI architecture will dramatically improve its responsiveness by accelerating the delivery of applications. Applications are able to be installed, upgraded and patched once, then securely delivered over the network to any student’s virtual desktop. Further, the college is able to reduce costs and complexities by eliminating the time previously required to manage and support individual desktop computers, and instead allocate precious resources to other important projects. For example, the college was able to upgrade the entire Boston campus to Windows 7 in a matter of minutes rather than the weeks it took for historical upgrades.

“A virtual desktop environment is becoming core to building a best-in-class data center architecture. The evolution to this solution creates both challenges and opportunities that Mosaic is helping organizations address to capture the full transformative benefits of the VDI solution,” said Arthur Demirjian, Vice President of sales, Mosaic Technology. “Mosaic is building momentum around its VDI architecture and revolutionizing the way organizations approach the data center. MCPHS is creating an environment that frees educators and students from the constraints of a traditional IT approach. We are excited to be part of this history-making experience.”

Mosaic was the obvious choice, as MCPHS needed a partner with extensive technical expertise. Mosaic was able to test and build the solution ahead of time in their Salem, NH facility. The total Mosaic solution provided MCPHS with server consolidation, disaster recovery, site manager, business continuity, VDI, and a high availability, never fail server. In the short amount of time since its deployment, they have already been able to reduce IT costs, as they are able to manage upgrades from one location. Further, the MCPHS network is more secure, as they are able to monitor with better tools. Along with this new solution, there is also redundant backup – if Boston was to go down, for instance, Worcester would be able to provide the same data.
