2012 is the year of celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the Bread and Roses Lawrence Textile Workers' Strike. In January, the Bread and Roses Centennial Committee introduces an exciting calendar of events, from an opening ceremony to a historical exhibit to a major musical weekend.

Lawrence events, January, 2012

January 8, 2012, 1-4 pm. Opening Reception for “The Mills of Lawrence,” an art exhibit by Michael Ramseur at Lawrence Heritage State Park. The exhibit will be open daily, 9-4, from January 2 through the 30th. Free admission.

January 12, 2012: Re-enactment of the morning of January 12, 1912

At 9:00 AM, a flag carrier will call the Strike in the Everett Mill with the ringing of the bell. He will proceed down Essex Street to City Hall, for a 9:15 ceremony including a Mayoral Proclamation, Ringing of City Hall Bell, flagraising, and performance by the L.H.S. Girls’ Ensemble. (Sponsored by the City of Lawrence, the Lawrence Historic Commission, the Monument Committee, the Lawrence History Center, Bread and Roses Heritage Committee, and the Bread & Roses Centennial Committee.)

January 12, 2012, 10 am. Ribbon cutting for “Short pay! All out”: The Great Lawrence Strike of 1912, an exhibit by the Lawrence History Center, housed on the 6th floor of the Everett Mill. A "virtual exhibit" goes live as well. The exhibit showcases the strike’s lead-up, events, and aftermath, with artifacts, rare video, oral history recordings, publications, and original documents. January 27, 2012: The People's Music Network for Songs of Freedom and Struggle will present an evening concert at Lawrence High School Performing Arts Center, featuring: Anne Feeney, Jon Fromer, Bev Grant, Tom Juravich, Lawrence High School Girl's Ensemble, and Rebel Voices, and more.
