New Book Combines Unique Humor with Serious Commentary

Fantasy Golf: A Search for Sanity is one of the year’s more unusual new books; it is guaranteed to provide both belly laughs and serious food for thought. The author, David G. Lavender, runs a fantasy golf league; each week he submits a report to the participants that includes a cover letter combining whimsy and black humor with ongoing laments about societal change.

Northfield, MN, October 31, 2005 --(PR.com)-- The weekly reports form the background for the narrative. Here’s a small sampling of the happenings Lavender describes:
Martha Burk and her army of “battling bitches” storming the hallowed ground of Augusta National.
Rush Limbaugh and Jesse Jackson trapped in an elevator during a rolling blackout in San Francisco.
Martha Stewart and Kenneth Lay preparing for incarceration.
Hillary Rodham Clinton courting her Republican constituents.

These messages are hilarious, but they have a serious purpose: they set the stage for a description of many Americans’ dismay at growing old in a society they cannot comprehend; and of spending their retirement years with declining pensions at a time when people whom Lavender calls scoundrels, charlatans, and whackos are accumulating incredible wealth through devious means. He compares two glitzy towns where he has lived – Ojai, California and Telluride, Colorado – to his favored place of residence, Northfield, Minnesota. He discusses why he prefers traditional Midwestern values to areas that attract the nouveau rich.

Delightful cartoons by Elaine Needham enhance the narrative and make this a book to dip into now and then, or to read in a single session. Here are representative quotes from enthusiastic readers.

“Lavender knows a bit about golf, even though he’s lousy at it,” says Mark Wipf, head pro at California’s Rustic Canyon golf course. “Everyone who has played the game or participated in a fantasy golf league will want to read this book. It describes some very funny events on the links, but it also contains serious discussion of American life that provides real food for thought. On a personal note, I’m amused that my wife Nancy plays a major role in the foolishness.”

“This could become a classic ‘bathroom book,’” says Sarah Smith, California- based editor and journalist. “Amidst some of the funniest vignettes I have ever read about crazy happenings at the turn of the century are some personal revelations that will leave older Americans scratching their heads about what is happening to our country. It could almost be titled Jon Stewart’s Daily Show Meets the PGA.”

“I know nothing about golf, but I found this an exceptional read,” says author, editor and publisher Linda Lane of Colorado. “David Lavender’s frustration over societal changes and his extraordinary command of the language combine to produce a humorous, irreverent and outrageous fictional piece that satirizes real events. Golfers will love Fantasy Golf; the book is also sure to appeal to many who do not play the game.”
