Saratoga Springs, NY, September 05, 2013 --(PR.com
)-- Driving along Route 50 towards in Ballston Spa towards Saratoga Springs, one can’t help but notice an elegant entrance with tall iron gates to what appears to be a mansion. In actuality, it is just that. The property once a gorgeous Georgian castle like estate built in 1929 as a private residence for Floyd J. Shutts a local knitting magnate from Amsterdam, NY. Shutts relocated to Ballston Spa in order to expand his business that produced men’s hosiery, wool socks, sweaters, sports coats and bathing suits.
During the construction Shutts went to a great deal of effort and expense to preserve the waterfalls and maintain the ecological charm of the natural setting.
After Shutts untimely death, the mansion had several owners; some excellent businessmen while other ended up in foreclosures. Around the mid 60’s, Chester Hotaling, a businessman from Schenectady purchased the property operating it as a restaurant known as the Chester House for 12 years gaining acclaim for business meetings and social events.
Joseph Balsamo purchased the restaurant from Hotaling, turning it into a family style Italian restaurant by its current name, Villa Balsamo, which was open only for the then six weeks of Saratoga flat track season.
Today the elegant secluded mansion sitting on 14 acres and surrounded by three small lakes, waterfalls and fountains, is once again for sale.
In fact, for the first time in years, Villa Balsamo did not open during the racing season. When probed by a reporter on why the Villa remained closed, Joseph Balsamo responded, “I’m almost 83 years old,” he says with a distinctly Italian accent. “That’s why. Nothing else but that.”
Larry LaBelle, Balsamo's attorney and prior city court judge stated that, “It was so jammed you could be standing in line for an hour and a half to get in." “It was a top-notch Italian restaurant.” LaBelle continued that he is confident the Villa will one day reopen with renewed vigor. Balsamo and LaBelle are hoping a new owner will appreciate the elegance and craftsmanship both inside and out. Balsamo started. “I have that feeling someone is going to come along, see this, pick it up and run with it,” he says. “It’s going to happen. I really feel that way.” http://www.scottvarley.com/saratoga-springs-commercial-listing.php?mlsnum=201321177
