Maypo Deluxe runs the gamut of sound.
Guitarist-Songwriter-Musician-Engineer-Producer-Mixer, Maypo Deluxe, the New Jersey based pop-rock band, have all the bases covered. Comprised of long time musician Mark Scandariato and engineer Kirk Kelsey, the East Coast duo are readying the release of their first album together, Homecoming.
The band decided to call themselves Maypo Deluxe as a tribute to a childhood nickname given to Mark by his father. As a youngster, Mark’s dad called him “MayPo” after the cartoon character “Marky MayPo,” that was synonymous with Maypo maple syrup flavored hot cereal. Mark’s father, who was a huge supporter of his music, passed away a few years ago.
Both Scandariato and Kelsey have a rich musical history. Mark, a self-taught, much in demand session musician, has been writing songs and composing music since high school. Local gigs gave way to regional concerts and studio work, with several years under the direction of Atlantic Records. Mark hit the road as lead guitarist and songwriter for a touring band, sharing the bill with artists such as Bob Dylan, Hootie and the Blowfish, The Spin Doctors, Lisa Loeb, Charlie Sexton, Letters To Cleo and more. He was also part of The Lilith Fair tour with Sarah McLachlan, Sheryl Crow, Missy Elliot and Luscious Jackson. As Mark’s reputation grew, so did the caliber of artists he worked with, including Kenny Aronoff, Raul Malo, Benmont Tench and Jackson Browne.
Kelsey has had a successful career as a mixer, engineer and producer, working with artists such as Robin Thicke, 3 Doors Down and Creed. It was his suggestion that Scandariato sing lead vocal on all the Maypo Deluxe tracks as well as play lead guitar. For Mark, this was the first working relationship where he had such complete trust in his partner that when he finished a song, he gave Kirk complete control to make any changes to it that he wanted. Thankfully, they always agreed.
Both men established one essential point while making this album – Maypo Deluxe would run the gamut of sound. While the songs have a retro appeal, they’re modern enough to catch the ear of any music lover. The album is purposely diverse, as the duo looked at this project as a musical portfolio. While a common thread runs through the album, each track stands on its own.
From the slow build of the haunting “Home,” to the guitar leading 80’s pop sound of “Long Way,” to the aggressive punk number “When She Loved Me,” and the blues driven “It’s OK,” Maypo Deluxe’s Homecoming offers ten tracks of musical goodness. A genuine smorgasbord of sound, Homecoming is nothing short of musical bliss.
