)-- Shop LaBu Inc. launches website (www.ShopLaBu.com) and immediately gears up for holiday shopping season. According to netcraft.com, as of November 2013 there are approximately 191,417,728 active websites; making it difficult to be seen amidst the competition. Reports suggest start-ups should spend anywhere from 20% to 90% of their time on marketing. For the founders and newly engaged couple Kayde Johnston and Marc Anderson that makes an already busy year even busier. In September the boutique went live after months of late nights and early mornings to launch the business. Currently, LaBu is gearing up for its first holiday season. “There’s a lot to learn. I have my bachelor’s in Merchandising but it’s been a few years since I’ve been active in the industry. As quickly as things change, we have to stay current if we want to succeed,” says Kayde. “Our days are only going to get busier as the business picks up. Especially when we add in planning a wedding,” adds Marc.
Jewelry is big business. The US Census Bureau lists the annual sales for jewelry stores at $29,714,000,000.00 in 2011. A significant portion of that is manufactured overseas in mass quantities and then imported to the United States for sale. LaBu wants to be the go-to destination for shoppers looking for new, emerging designers and jewelry that isn’t mass market. LaBu is actively seeking out new designers that reflect its Malibu cool, effortless style. The jewelry pieces that shoppers can transition from one event straight into the next. “We’re starting small and growing organically. When we first launched we weren’t trying to stay away from mass market, but we quickly decided to make the transition to designer jewelry. With the exception of Etsy there’s really a hole in the market for an online destination geared toward emerging jewelry designers,” comments Kayde.
In 2014, LaBu plans to begin shipping internationally, launch an internship program for college students, and release a private line of jewelry to complement the designers they carry on their site. Somewhere in there the co-founders will find a little time to get married on the beaches of Malibu.
