New Safety Concept Available from Icon Tire

Colored indicators are now available for tires that identify loss of performance as a tire wears. These indicators empower the driver to make educated decisions regarding tire maintenance and replacement before an accident may occur.

Beaverton, OR, January 27, 2014 --(PR.com)-- Icon Tire, the first tire built with Visual Tire Performance Indicators (VTPI) on the market, is proud to announce that it will now offer VTPI’s to other tire manufacturers and distributors. Making VTPI available to other tire manufacturers and distributors fully supports Icon Tire’s mission to “reduce the number of accidents caused by inadequate tread depth and poor tire maintenance.”

“We believe that everybody should have access to VTPI. Icon Tire is about making life a little safer, and we are excited to make VTPI available to any tire manufacturer or marketer that wants to join our cause,” said Icon Tire Founder and CEO, Pat O’Brien.

Tire performance loss is a real concern. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT HS 811 617, April 2012), poor tire condition and maintenance are the cause of 5% of all annually reported motorized vehicle accidents. Nearly a third of those are caused by tires with less than 4/32’s remaining tread. Traditionally, people have been encouraged to use a tread depth gauge, a penny, a quarter, or to look for Tread Wear Bars to tell if they have enough tread to be safe on the road. Icon Tire believes that there is a better way to inform the driver as to tire safety.

Icon Tire represents the top level of safety and value by employing patent-pending VTPI. Built into the tread of the tire, VTPI’s color coding system of black, yellow and red indicators enables drivers to know when the safety of their tread is compromised in various driving conditions. By using this tool, motorists are empowered to make critical decisions regarding their driving habits and the replacement of worn tires. VTPI are not inserted during the tire build process and can be added to the tire at the factory, or as an added option at retail.
