“We are once again pleased to announce the 13th running of The Sail Park City Regatta™. This exciting event raises money to support the SWIM Across the Sound, an organization that provides assistance to cancer patients and their families right here in our community,” said Regatta Chair Eric Peabody. “Cancer is so prevalent in our society that everyone we know has been affected by it in one way or another. This regatta provides a spirited and fun way for the community to come together for a compelling cause. Over a quarter of a million dollars has been raised since its inception.”
"The origins of the regatta started over 13 years ago when a few members of Fayerweather Yacht Club were observing the SWIM Across the Sound," said Marketing and Development Chair Rick Perret. “An idea clicked in their minds - why can't we do a Regatta and raise money to help? That first Regatta saw 7 boats at the starting line....now we've grown to nearly 40 boats and we hope to have more in 2014.
This year’s sponsors and vendors include Whole Foods, Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance, Weather Routing Incorporated, Gifted of Larchmont, WindCheck Magazine, and Captain’s Cove Seaport.
The Regatta will consist of up to two races, depending on conditions. There will be Spinnaker and Non-Spinnaker PHRF Classes, along with a new non-competitive "Navigator Fun Race." One-design racers, junior sailors, and boats with all-women crews are encouraged to race. Entrants can qualify for 2014 ECSA Points. Trophies will be awarded to the first, second and third place finishers in each division, and all skippers and crew are urged to solicit donations for their boat. The five boats that raise the most funds will receive special awards. All donations to the Sail Park City Regatta™ are tax deductible.
The crew that raises the most funds will be awarded the Jan Williams Memorial Trophy, honoring the SWIM Across the Sound Co-Chair and volunteer who was perhaps the charity’s staunchest supporter. This year’s newly created Perpetual Trophy, engraved with the name of each year’s winning boat, will be on permanent display at Captain’s Cove Seaport.
