)-- This is a David and Goliath story. Can an unsigned songwriter pen a great pop song, record it, market it himself and prevail in an industry dominated by giants? That’s the hope of songwriter, guitarist, producer Mark Laseau. Today, he released his first single, Stupid Girl, under the virtual band name, Magik Browneez. It will be a tough slog.
In one corner we have Stupid Girl, a catchy Top-40-style rockin’ tale of unrequited love, with smart lyrics, a driving beat, a smooth but powerful guitar solo and a roaring female vocal. In the other corner are radio playlists, music videos and television, all of which are very difficult to reach, unless you have the money and marketing prowess of a major record label.
But can a deserving song rise to the top?
“It’s an uphill battle,” stated Mr. Laseau, “because in order for people to like a song, they have to hear it and that’s what radio, music videos and television do for an artist. You have to have deep pockets to play in that arena.”
Decide for yourself, is Stupid Girl ready for the big time?
