Diversity Leadership Retreat to Share Market Insights & Competitive Strategy

Corporate, Nonprofit & Education Leaders Head to Florida to Discuss the Future of Demographic Changes and its Impact on Organizational Performance.

Orlando, FL, July 12, 2014 --(PR.com)-- The Society for Diversity will host the 2014 Diversity Leadership Retreat on July 24th – 25th at the Omni Orlando Resorts in Champions Gate, FL. The theme of the Leadership Retreat is “Planning for the Future: Linking Diversity, Demographics & Dollars.” The significance of this event is that it is designed to provide specific examples of how to increase the organizational value of Diversity and Inclusion by sharing demographic market insights and honing an organization’s skill in executing a robust competitive plan of action.

“Here is where diversity meets strategy. The purpose of the Leadership Retreat is to help organizations go beyond race and gender or token representation, towards key performance indicators such as the ability to innovate; engendering a culture of excellence; and tapping into emerging groups,” Leah Smiley, President of the Society for Diversity says. “When you look at your target market and how their needs and preferences have changed, at the end of the day, executives will have to answer why they didn’t do more to plan for the future.”

Smiley asserts that “Diversity is the future of business,” but she challenges organizations to engage white men in their diversity and inclusion efforts. “Too many people look at organizational diversity and inclusion interventions and assume that it excludes them. When in fact, the future of diversity includes heterosexual white men too,” she explains.

The Society for Diversity’s subsidiary, the Institute for Diversity Certification, will offer a diversity certification track at the Leadership Retreat. Within the Certified Diversity Executive (CDE) program, there is a competency on “Including White Men.” The purpose of this competency is to engage the white male in a culture that will become increasingly diverse.

In “Creating a New Normal: White Men at the Diversity Table”, HuffPost Blogger Colette A.M. Phillips reminds organizations that “There are many white men who have been and still are at the forefront of societal change to increase equity. White men could be the most important group to ensuring that diversity and inclusion truly works. By ensuring that they are engaged, interested and invested players in the diversity and inclusion conversation, America will forge a new normal.”

The Diversity Leadership Retreat will have 4 keynote presentations, 16 breakout workshops, a Champions for Diversity Awards presentation, and a vendor expo. Presentations include:

· -“Three Degrees of Separation: Linking Employee Networks & Diversity Recruiting to Bottom Line Impact” with Isaias Zamarripa, Johnson Controls
· -“Supplier Diversity Solutions: Metrics, Outreach & Sustainability” panel discussion with Effenus Henderson, HenderWorks Consulting; Malik Ali, Central and North Florida Minority Supplier Development Council; and Diana Bolivar, the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metro Orlando
· -“The Business Case for Diversity & Inclusion” with Dr. Freeman Hrabowski, University of Maryland – Baltimore
· -“10 Global Trends That are Keeping CEO’s up at Night” with Dr. Shirley-Davis Sheppard, The Success Doctor and SHRM

The national conference will be the first of its kind to include a diversity certification track. The Institute for Diversity Certification has had immense success in providing Certified Diversity Professional (CDP) and Certified Diversity Executive (CDE) credentials to over 200 individuals from leading corporate, nonprofit, government and educational institutions such as Wal-Mart, Eli Lilly, Cisco, Rolls Royce, Mercedes Benz, Cummins, Sodexo, Hanes Brands, Colgate-Palmolive, U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Air Force Academy, Federal Reserve Bank, University of Miami, University of Mississippi Medical Center, Teach for America, Goodwill Industries, and more.
