At Sheldrake, Summer Isn't Over Yet and Fall is Already Planned

What to do this year in late summer and fall.

Larchmont, NY, August 06, 2014 --(PR.com)-- We’re already being bombarded with back-to-school information wherever we turn: TV, internet, radio, newspapers, stores… But, it is still summer and doctors are increasingly encouraging people to spend time outside, particularly during this season when the weather is good. Why? Well, the vitamin D your body makes from being exposed to sunlight builds strong bones, wards off infection, helps kids with asthma breathe better. In addition, having fun outdoors is also a great stress reliever and mood booster. At Sheldrake Environmental Center, normally summer activities end mid-August. This year Sheldrake is supporting doctors by offering these seasonal activities into September.

Come mid-August, most summer camps are over. But, school is still out and don’t the kids need something to do? This year, 3- to 5-year olds can take advantage of August Mini Camp weekdays, the mornings of August 11th to the 22nd. At the 60-acre Larchmont Reservoir Conservancy, they’ll have fun with science and nature and come away amazed by their discoveries as they explore the meadow, pond and forest, and learn about turtles, bugs, flowers, trees and everything else they find around the trails.

In early September, families can visit Sheldrake on Saturday mornings for Family Weekends. Seeds, Seeds, Seeds! is scheduled for September 6th. With a Sheldrake naturalist as their guide, they’ll find all sorts of seeds that will turn into next year’s flowers and trees. On September 13th, when they participate in Who Lives at Sheldrake?, they’ll learn where and how the animals who live at the Conservancy make their homes.

In the fall, doctors would agree, there are still plenty of days to take advantage of when the weather is favorable for spending time outdoors. Sheldrake is preparing for the activities that it normally offers this time of year: International Coastal Cleanup (9/20), the Fall Festival (10/19) and the Compost Bin Sale & Workshop (10/25). The Volunteer Environmental Educator Training program will also once again start (10/16). Currently, applications are being accepted from those interested in participating in this 12-session course. An addition to the line-up this fall is the special event “Flavour of Italy" Prosecco Tasting Party (10/21). An indoor event to benefit Sheldrake, it will help raise needed funds for the out-of-doors nature exploration programs the center offers.

Sheldrake Environmental Center is a non-profit organization whose mission is to inspire environmental awareness and action in the community, and to preserve, protect and enhance local environmental resources.
