Restoration of 3D Film to Premiere at The Museum of Modern Art

Arch Oboler's “The Bubble” to play as part of museum’s restoration festival.

Clifton, NJ, October 29, 2014 --(PR.com)-- The digital restoration of a 3D science-fiction film from 1966 has been announced as one of the entries in The Museum of Modern Art’s To Save and Project: The 12th MoMA International Festival of Film Preservation. “The Bubble” will be seen in 2K digital 3D for the first time after an extensive 14-month restoration by the 3D Film Archive, a Clifton, N.J.-based company that specializes in restoring archival 3D films. “It was a painstaking restoration,” said Robert Furmanek, the archive’s founder and director. “Not only did the original camera negative need to be digitally scanned and cleaned, but many shots were not aligned properly. We had to go back and fix the film’s stereoscopic flaws, shot-by-shot.”

Written, produced and directed by radio pioneer Arch Oboler (“Bwana Devil,” “Five”), “The Bubble,” concerns three passengers aboard a private flight—a husband (Michael Cole), his wife in labor (Deborah Walley) and the pilot (Johnny Desmond), who find themselves flying into a turbulent storm. Landing in a nearby town, they receive care, but the inhabitants of the village all act in a strange, robotic manner. The three soon find that the whole town is inside an impenetrable bubble, controlled by unseen forces.

When the Archive located the original 35mm film negatives from a public storage unit, it was discovered that they had been baking in the southern California heat for nearly five years. "The camera negative was in terrible condition with severe fading from decades of bad storage. The cans were rusty from moisture and it took multiple ultra-sonic cleanings to get all the dirt and crud off the film. We were able to bring back most of the color and the final results are superb,” said Furmanek.

The restoration of “The Bubble” premieres Friday, November 7, at 8:30 p.m. at The Museum of Modern Art’s Theater 1 (The Roy and Niuta Titus Theater 1). An encore screening will take place in Theater 2 on Sunday, November 9, at 1:00 p.m. “The Bubble” is a presentation of the 3D Film Archive and is distributed by Kino Lorber Films.
