L.A. Rocker Nate Beck Becomes Part Owner in Twin Cities School of Rock Franchise

After 6 years in Los Angeles, Nate Beck returns to the Twin Cities to become a business partner in School of Rock, the music school he attended as a teen.

St. Paul, MN, October 29, 2014 --(PR.com)-- The School of Rock was founded in 1998 in Philadelphia PA on the premise that “taking music lessons and never playing a gig is like going to basketball practice and never playing a game. After a while, there’s no point.” So the School of Rock gets its students performing on stage – in a band - as early as 8 years old. “Not only does this teach them to play music,” said Nate Beck. “But it teaches team work, it raises their self confidence….and it’s a heck of a lot of fun!”

Beck should know. He is a graduate of the St. Paul School of Rock. Following High School graduation, he moved to Los Angeles to attend Musicians Institute, where he formed a band that was nominated for an award in the Rock Single of the Year category in the Los Angeles Music Awards. They opened for Adler’s Appetite and Gilby Clarke, both former Guns-n-Roses members.

While in L.A. Beck met Marc Danzeisen. Danzeisen played drums with Vivian Campbell (Dio and Def Leppard), Earl Slick (best known for his collaborations with David Bowie, John Lennon and Yoko Ono), Gilby Clarke as well as many other high-profile musicians. In addition to his studio work, Danzeisen also produces records for a handful of musicians. Beck was one of them.

Danzeisen took Beck under his wings to produce an album with Beck's first band. When that band broke up, Beck wrote and scored an album under the band name The Manchester Social Club. Danzeisen contributed to the record by playing drums on all of the songs as well as organ, slide guitar, backing vocals, and bass on select songs as well as producing the album. Soapbox Standards was released in December 2013.

During his six years in L.A. Beck returned to the Twin Cities annually to perform and to visit friends and family. “The music scene in the Twin Cities is better than L.A.,” said Beck. “L.A. is saturated with wanna-be-rock stars and pay-to-play clubs. The only ones ‘winning’ in this scenario are the club owners who get paid by the bands so it doesn’t matter if they have 10 people or 1000 people in their doors on any given night. It’s really sad.”

In May 2014, Beck returned to his hometown of St. Paul and became an active business partner in the School of Rock; a business his mother started when Beck was a teen.

Fully expecting her son to work in the family business, Marmolejo was surprised yet supportive when Beck announced he was moving to California after graduating from the St. Paul Conservatory for Performing Artists High School. “Though he valued the education he got at School of Rock, his eye was on rock stardom not business ownership,” said Marmolejo. “And as a mom, I believed I should encourage him to pursue his dream. We all say, ‘All I want is for my child to be happy.’ So to be true to that, I had to support his move.”

“But I’m delighted to have him back in the Twin Cities; both personally and professionally,” said Marmolejo. “He has even more to offer the business now, based on his experience in L.A. and he can relate to both the teachers and the students in a way only another musician can do.”

The School of Rock has also been good for Beck, both personally and professionally. He rebuilt his band, The Manchester Social Club, with connections made through School of Rock…Nick Benson, a guitarist who attended School of Rock when Beck was a student there, bassist Taylor McKee who teaches bass, guitar, drums and keys at School of Rock and drummer Nick Grubbe, a former School of Rock teacher and current substitute drum teacher. The band has played several clubs around the Cities (7th Street Entry, Triple Rock, Minnesota Music Café) and is working with the Minnesota Music Café to establish a no-cover, monthly Pub Rock night the first Thursday of each month beginning November 6.
