Pittsburgh, PA, February 15, 2015 --(PR.com)-- With dozens of nextbike programs already operating around the globe, the German-based bike sharing firm has obtained FCC certification and will soon deploy systems in the cities of Pittsburgh, West Palm Beach, Weehawken and Hoboken.

The flexibility of the nextbike system designed for these cities is unrivaled since it provides the security and reliability of traditional bike share docking stations while also offering the advantage of smart bikes, which can be parked at any standard bike rack in the city when a rider is not near a dedicated bike share station thanks to their onboard automated locking system. It also means riders will never have to deal with frustration of trying to return a bike to a full docking station since the bikes can be locked to any rack or secure structure in the city (based on permissions granted by the program operator via the nextbike software and onboard active GPS systems).

nextbike’s “hybrid” bike sharing system is the most feature-rich and flexible bikeshare solution available, not just for members of the program, but also for the system operator. Riders can access bikes directly via the onboard computer which can accept NFC, pin codes and RFID member cards in addition to quick access via the nextbike mobile app, or they can simply use the touchscreen kiosk if they desire. nextbike’s system management software is one of the most proven and widely used applications in the industry.

Pittsburgh’s program will feature 500 state-of-the-art “smart bikes” with active onboard GPS systems and automated locks that operate independently and in conjunction with 50 solar-powered, “smart” docking stations. This federally funded project is slated to open in Q2 of 2015 and will be one of the first hybrid bikeshare systems in North America.

West Palm Beach, Florida and the New Jersey cities of Weehawken and Hoboken will also receive nextbike’s hybrid bike sharing systems comprised of smart bikes and smart docking stations in Q2 of 2015.
