Pro-Staff Warns About the Health Care Risks Associated with Rodents

Pro-Staff Pest Control, a top-rated pest control company, urges homeowners to be cognizant of the signs of a rodent infestation to avoid health problems.

Orlando, FL, February 27, 2015 --(PR.com)-- Mice and rats travel to some of the dirtiest places in their quest for food and water. As a result, they carry at least 25 diseases which can easily spread through a bite, scratch, or just inhaling their feces and urine. If not treated, an infection can set in causing chills, fever, vomiting, headache, rashes and muscle and joint pains. Some people may even suffer permanent damage or death as a result.

Gaining access to a home through small openings, mice and rats quickly start to multiply. A mouse population can grow to more than 100 within three months and leave behind more than 1,000 droppings.

Rodents can also carry tapeworms, ringworms, mites and fleas. In fact, they are often hosts for deer ticks which can transmit Lyme disease.

Homeowners can usually tell they have mice when they discover their fecal droppings. Rats may not be as noticeable because they often hide in garages or outbuildings. When the weather gets cold, they enter a home through an opening which could be as small as a quarter. They like to make nests in warm places. For health reasons and also due to the damage they can cause by chewing wood and electrical wires, a homeowner should remove them as soon as they see them.

If one does suspect that there may be some rodent activity in their home, check beneath the stove and refrigerator or in drawers or storage areas. Wash any areas that have come in contact with rodents with hot water and bleach. Make sure there are no holes on the outside of your home. Seal gaps around electrical plates, pipes, and wiring. Set traps, patch any areas of possible rodent entry, and remove food sources. It’s also important that one wears protective clothing and gloves when removing carcasses and disinfect any areas of contact immediately. Never use poison because the rodents eventually become resistant to it and there’s a possibility that pets and children could come in contact with or ingest the poison.

If a home or business owner thinks that removing a nest of rodents is repulsive, the “Rodent Masters” at Pro-Staff Pest Control knows what to do. Call 407-292-PEST and a technician will quickly and safely exterminate the rats and mice from homes and businesses, providing ease of mind.
