Cyclone Sidr Victims Aided by Humanity First

Barisal District, Bangladesh, November 23, 2007 --(PR.com)-- Cyclone Sidr met with Bangladesh’s shores on the evening of November 15th, and moved its way into the mainland. UN reports indicate that over 27 million people have been affected by the deadly tropical storm. The cyclone, according to national relief and rescue workers, has left an official 3,153 dead, with more people washed ashore each day. The disaster is worsened by the difficulty in transportation and continual blackouts, making it difficult for relief efforts to reach survivors.

Humanity First UK has led relief efforts with a team of doctors deployed in the area. As new reports emerge of diarrhea related deaths, vast amounts of medical help are needed. Accordingly, another team from HF Canada is on standby and will soon follow into the country.

Thus far, Humanity First has sent water launches from Dhaka and Chittagong. The coastal villages of Barguna and Patuakhali are anticipated to be the areas most in need of humanitarian assistance. Plans are being constructed to open soup kitchens and provide additional medical assistance to prevent the spread of water borne diseases such as cholera and typhoid. More details will be released once the respondent teams are mobilized on the ground and communication links are opened.
