Cyma Orchids Donates 25 Orchids to Buena Park High School for Use in "Every 15 Minutes" Drunk Driving Awareness Event

Cyma Orchids partnered with local law enforcement agencies and Brea High School to donate 25 live orchids to be used in place of headstones for the school’s “Every 15 Minutes” Drunk Driving Awareness event on April 7 and 8, which seeks to deter high school juniors and seniors from drinking and driving.

Anaheim, CA, April 18, 2015 --(PR.com)-- Cyma Orchids, a local family owned and operated grower, wholesaler and distributor of high quality orchids and unique home décor accessories, partnered with local law enforcement agencies and Brea High School to donate 25 fresh orchid flowers for their use in the “Every 15 Minutes,” a two-day, national Drunk Driving Awareness event that was held on April 7 and 8 at the high school and high schools throughout the country. Purposefully held just before prom and graduation, the event seeks to educate high school students about the dangers of drinking and driving by pulling high school students out of their class rooms every 15 minutes to illustrate the reality that every 15 minutes, a high school student is killed by a drunk driver. The orchids being donated will be used in place of headstones to symbolize the life and death of each student.

The high school students who volunteer to be pulled out of their classes by the Grim Reaper as the “victims” of fatal drunk driving accidents are taken to a hotel where they spend the night so that their friends and family can experience the reality of their absence, as if they had really been killed in a drunk driving accident.

The student-volunteers write letters to their parents about their untimely, early deaths caused by drunk driving accidents—letters that are often very emotional.

On the second day of the event, an assembly is held and a fatal drunk driving car accident is simulated using actors and life-like crash scenes complete with crashed cars, graphic wounds, dead bodies, and live rescue crews and police who arrive on the crash scene as if it were real, taking crash victims away to hospitals in ambulances and drunk student drivers to jail in police cars. The enactments are video-taped and put on YouTube as well as shown to high school juniors and seniors, showing them first-hand how fatal, traumatic and real are the effects of drinking and driving. The videos are made to be as realistic as possible including hospital scenes of doctors treating crash victims, parents seeing their injured children, parents learning about the deaths of their children, parents identifying the bodies of their dead children as well as scenes of drunk teenage drivers being arrested, going to jail and later going to trial and being convicted of murder or manslaughter and receiving jail sentences. It is all made to look and feel as if it were real in order to make a dramatic and significant impact on high school seniors and juniors in order to strongly deter them from drinking and driving.

“We are proud to be participating in this important drunk driving awareness event and hope that the donation of our orchids will provide a live, lasting symbol for the families and friends of the teenage lives that are ‘lost,’” states Ken Chung, owner and operator of Cyma Orchids. “Teenage drunk driving is a terrible reality and one that we want to help end,” Mr. Chung continued.
