Emergency Reconstruction Employee Helps Make Super Bowl Dream Come True

An Emergency Reconstruction employee has served on a team that has helped fulfill a brain cancer survivor's "bucket list" wish of attending the Super Bowl.

Raleigh, NC, February 05, 2016 --(PR.com)-- A Raleigh man is checking the Super Bowl off his bucket list, thanks in part to Emergency Reconstruction employee Hannah Lennon and her Leadership Raleigh project team. Hannah and her team worked with the Cary-based non-profit group, “Fill Your Bucket List,” to grant the wish of 26-year-old brain tumor survivor, Grant Lafoon, to attend Super Bowl 50 in San Francisco with his mother. Lafoon’s mother, Melinda, left her full-time job and moved in with her son in order to be his full-time caretaker during treatment. “She dropped everything to move in with me, so I’m taking her to the Super Bowl,” Lafoon said. “Just me and my mom.”

Hannah Lennon is the first Emergency Reconstruction employee to participate in the prestigious Leadership Raleigh program. Each year, 52 participants representing diverse professional backgrounds are selected to participate in this nine-month program. In addition to monthly outings, each participant is placed on a project team with four other individuals where they collaborate on an initiative for a local non-profit. “We wanted to partner with a non-profit that resonated with all of us. Everyone is touched by cancer in some form or another,” said Lennon. One of the prerequisites for her group was to find an organization that had an immediate need and could really benefit from what a Leadership Raleigh project team could bring to the table.

After spending several months looking for donated tickets, the team faced the reality that the foundation would likely have to purchase the tickets at a steep price of nearly $4200 each. “It was discouraging to think about all of the wishes we could potentially grant this year if we didn’t have this huge expense,” said Lennon. The Fill Your Bucket List foundation has only been around since 2014, and the foundation’s resources are limited, but growing. Hannah’s team continued to spread the message and reach out to people for help. Thankfully, on Monday, January 25, two tickets arrived in the mail from a woman who had heard about the effort via social media.

Hannah and her project team will join Grant and Melinda this Friday morning at the airport for their Super Bowl send-off.
