Cancer Transitions Workshop Series Helps Cancer Survivors Thrive

Cancer Support Community Central New Jersey Expands Free Survivorship Program to Three Locations

Bedminster, NJ, April 02, 2016 --(PR.com)-- Cancer Support Community Central New Jersey (CSCCNJ) will offer Cancer Transitions – a program to help cancer survivors make the transition from active treatment to post-treatment care. Developed by the Cancer Support Community and the LIVESTRONG Foundation, the program was created to bridge the gap between cancer treatment and life following cancer. This six week series of classes is offered at numerous locations throughout central New Jersey. The program is designed to support cancer survivors and assist them with gentle exercise, medical management, nutrition, and coping strategies. CSCCNJ provides these classes free to all survivors who wish to participate.

American Cancer society reports nearly 14.5 million cancer survivors in the United States as of 2014, many of which are dealing with a heavy physical and psychological burden as they transition from cancer patient to survivor. In fact, cancer is increasingly being viewed for many as a chronic illness. Currently, there are no free programs comparable to Cancer Transitions to accommodate this need for survivors and ease shift from active to post treatment.

“Cancer Transitions provided me with the opportunity to share my feelings with others who have walked a similar path,” says Darleen Shamus, Cancer Transitions participant. “I didn’t realize it right away, but while my support network of friends, family and medical team were celebrating the completion of my treatment, I found myself worried about what happens next. It was a great to share my concerns with others, and know that these feelings are part of a new normal.”

Cancer Transitions offers guest speakers including a nurse, social worker, registered dietician, and a fitness expert to discuss a varied selections of survivorship topics, support, and lifestyle advice.

CSCCNJ’s Cancer Transitions series will be held this spring at the following locations:
· Overlook Medical Center in Summit, NJ • Tuesdays, April 26 – May 31 at 6:00-8:30 pm
