Leader of Shorecrest Basketball "Metamorphosis" Head Coach Daryl Blume Retires

Coach Blume Departs Shorecrest Basketball with 5 Graduating Senior Starters.

St. Petersburg, FL, May 01, 2016 --(PR.com)-- After a decade as a leader in the Shorecrest basketball program, seven years of which he served as boys varsity head coach, Coach Daryl Blume has announced his retirement from Shorecrest Preparatory School.

Blume states, “I have immensely enjoyed the opportunity of coaching and having a small influence in the lives of so many young men who have played for Shorecrest basketball the past ten years. The ten years of coaching, seven at the varsity level have brought some tremendous memories for the kids, the school and me personally. Thank you for the opportunity.”

At the helm of Shorecrest basketball, Blume holds a career record of 138-55 and District Record of 84-10 with an average of 70 points per game and annual appearances in the top state rankings. In the 2016 season, the team went 19-9, won the Bay Conference Championship for the fifth year in a row and was district runner-up, landing the team in its seventh consecutive regional appearance. As Coach Blume departs, Shorecrest also bids farewell to five graduating senior starting players.

“Coach Blume has been an inspiration to his players and our school community for the last decade; he’s going to be a hard act to follow,” says Shorecrest Athletic Director Jeff Raab. “The 2016-17 school year will be a building one for this team, but I know with Coach Blume’s legacy, our players have the tools they need to rise to the challenge.”

In a 2012 article from the Tampa Bay Times, Bob Putnam wrote, “Shorecrest coach Daryl Blume brought the same unbound passion to succeed to Shorecrest that had always governed his life. Players fed off his energy until they ran at a pace that turned every game into Armageddon.”

Blume recalls, “The Final Four appearance in 2012, with my son on the team and a group of players that worked so hard since the seventh grade was priceless. I will never forget the tourney run that season and my son’s string of 3-pointers in multiple regional games. I was so proud of them all, but it was an extra special experience to share with your son. Then to repeat in 2014 with an almost entirely different squad, that was fueled to continue the tradition, was nothing short of amazing.”

In his first year as head varsity coach in 2009, Blume’s team earned 13 consecutive wins in January, its first district title in 17 years and its first regional win. By the 2014 season, Blume’s team, with a 25-5 record, made Shorecrest history, earning a regional title, a Final Four appearance, and an undefeated streak in district play. In addition to transforming the basketball program, Blume played an integral role in the campaign for the Shorecrest Athletic Center built in 2011. The basketball court in Shorecrest’s Crisp Gym is named for him.

According to Shorecrest Headmaster Mike Murphy, “For ten years Daryl Blume has dedicated his time, talent and resources to teach boys the importance of hard work and the value of being a team player. He accomplished this through building a high school basketball program that is respected across the state. Shorecrest is indebted to Daryl Blume for his contributions to the lives of our student athletes, our basketball program and the school.”

Blume will assist the Shorecrest Athletic Department in the search for his replacement and will continue to work with student athletes from Shorecrest and other Tampa Bay Area schools through the Basketball Warehouse, a non-profit organization he founded alongside assistant coach Allen Williams, a University of North Alabama Athletic Hall of Fame inductee for basketball. The Basketball Warehouse was established in 2011 to provide a place for students to play basketball, get extra help in their classroom studies, and do their homework after school. The Basketball Warehouse mission is to teach life skills through basketball and academic mentoring, discipline, perseverance, respect and teamwork; and how these principles can be applied in everyday life, when making healthy life choices.
