Public Speaking Fear and Phobia: How Your Nervous System Traps You

The infographic “Cheat Sheet for Overcoming Public Speaking Fear” explains the causes of public speaking fear and how to overcome it using two key steps.

Washington, DC, May 21, 2016 --(PR.com)-- Dr. Cheryl Mathews has released the infographic: Cheat Sheet for Overcoming Public Speaking Fear.

The infographic shows how the nervous system can get stuck in a self-perpetuating cycle of fear and what to do. It also explains that there are two stages of fear: First-fear (uncontrollable) and second-fear (controllable). First-fear feeds into second-fear and causes escalation and panic. The infographic shows how to manage the process and keep fear to a manageable level.

“When you develop a fear or phobia of public speaking, it’s easy to get stuck and to stay stuck for many years,” said Dr. Cheryl Mathews. “Once you understand how fear works, and how your nervous system traps you, you can begin to take control.”

The infographic outlines two key steps to overcome public speaking fear and phobia: information and careful application of that information in a safe environment.

Dr. Mathews developed a public speaking phobia program that follows the two steps. It starts with a self-paced video course. The course uses animations and interactive exercises to explain how fear works and how to manage it (http://bit.ly/1OPvTrG).

The second step in the program is a safe “laboratory” where participants learn how to apply the fear management techniques that they learned in the course. Participants work at their own pace in a small group and are coached by Dr. Mathews. The lab is not about practicing public speaking per se—it’s about learning how to manage the fear process. It meets online using video conferencing or in the Washington DC metro area (http://bit.ly/22hfDSo).
