Arizona Public Service Company (APS) and BRIDGE Energy Group Create Revolutionary Geospatial Visualization System for Energy Control Center

Visualization System Displays Contingency Results and Situational Status of Transmission Grid Components in Real-Time.

Marlborough, MA, July 14, 2016 --(PR.com)-- BRIDGE Energy Group (BRIDGE), the leading consulting and systems integration company focused on improving utility operational performance, announced today the latest success story from its partnership with Arizona Public Service (APS) - the new Geospatial Visualization System (GVS) deployed by APS in their Energy Control Center. Working with APS’ Operational Technology (OT) and Information Technology (IT) teams, BRIDGE transformed thousands of data elements previously available only in table format into a rich, visual display of the Arizona transmission grid -- improving situational awareness and enhancing the Operators’ ability to proactively respond to potential problems.

As Arizona’s largest and longest serving electric company, APS supports 1.2 million customers spread out over 35,646 square-miles and represents the nation’s sixth largest service territory. Always seeking to enhance its excellence in customer service, APS enlisted the help of BRIDGE to redesign the industry standard for viewing contingency results and real-time situational awareness.

BRIDGE worked with APS to correlate and process data from 900 substations, 1200 transmission lines and 75 generating units, delivering it to the Energy Control Center Transmission and Balancing Authority operators in near-real-time. The data is then displayed geospatially in map layers and graphically via dynamic dashboards.

“GVS provides our operators with greater situational awareness by providing a geo-spatial view of our transmission system. This allows the operators to assess and respond to real-time conditions and real-time contingency results more rapidly, enhancing reliability for our customers,” said Sarah Kist, Director of Transmission Operations & Maintenance at APS.

GVS was designed to augment existing control systems. It is based on a combination of available commercial solutions, system integration and transmission operations expertise. The new method of grid monitoring collects data from a variety of systems and sources -- enabling the operational health of 842 contingencies to be visualized -- in real-time -- on a geospatial map. Using the layered geo-surface map, APS quickly evaluates hundreds of assets at-a-glance, while receiving visual alerts or “blooms” for components that exceed normal operational thresholds.

“BRIDGE provided the subject matter expertise and support that allowed us to develop a world class visualization system for system operations that will benefit APS now and in the future,” said Kist.

“BRIDGE brings the experience and expertise to create solutions to real-world challenges faced by utilities and grid operators,” said Forrest Small, VP Grid Optimization, BRIDGE Energy Group. “We are proud to deliver APS a technology platform that helps human operators ensure the safety, reliability and resilience of the modern grid. With GVS, APS can stay focused on ensuring the highest level of operational performance, service availability and customer satisfaction.”
