Status of Law Enforcement Relations with the Indianapolis Mental Health Community

Unfortunately, the criminal justice system has become an all too common endpoint for those committing minor crimes but also suffering from mental illness. So what is the answer? Captain Lorenzo Lewis, Community Outreach Officer for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department will hold a forum to answer questions from mental health consumers on Friday, September 9th as part of the 2016 Annual KEY Consumer Conference in Indianapolis, IN.

Indianapolis, IN, September 09, 2016 --(PR.com)-- Unfortunately, the criminal justice system has become an all too common end-point for those committing minor crimes but also suffering from mental illness. So what is the answer?

KEY Consumer Organization announces that Captain Lorenzo Lewis, IMPD Community Engagement Officer, will hold a question and answer forum about the relations between law enforcement and those with mental illness. The session will take place on September 9th with mental health consumers and practitioners attending the 2016 KEY Consumer Conference in Indianapolis on September 9th.

The 24th Annual KEY Consumer Conference will also feature a keynote address from Tamra Oman who is the first "peer/consumer" to be hired in the state of Wisconsin to work in a correctional facility in the last 30 years. Her focus over the last 10 years has been working with individuals in the criminal justice system with addiction and mental health challenges.

KEY Consumer Organization was incorporated as a nonprofit in 1991 as a voice for those with mental health challenges. KEY advocates that recovery from mental illness is possible, and with proper treatment and support many with mental illness can live as productive and independent citizens. Education and reduction of stigma are important in encouraging those with mental wellness issues to seek treatment and know that they can recover.

Registrations for the conference on Friday, September 9th at the Indianapolis Crowne Plaza Hotel (2501 S. High School Road) are still available. The conference begins at 9:00 am and concludes at 3:30 pm. Members of the press are welcome to attend free of charge. This is the 24th annual KEY conference. Last year's conference had approximately 200 in attendance.
