South Nassau Communities Hospital Awarded National Recognition for Outstanding Elder Care

As a NICHE designated hospital, South Nassau will serve as an incubator of evidence-based, interdisciplinary advancements in care for elder patients.

Oceanside, NY, October 07, 2016 --(PR.com)-- South Nassau Communities Hospital has been awarded designation as a NICHE hospital for its commitment and dedication to meeting the complex healthcare needs of elder patients. South Nassau is just the second Long Island-based hospital to earn the designation.

NICHE (Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders) is an international program designed to help improve the care of older adults and was founded on the vision that all patients 65-and-over should receive sensitive and exemplary care. To fulfill that vision, NICHE provides principles and tools to stimulate a change in the culture of healthcare facilities to achieve patient-centered care for elder patients. Based out of NYU College of Nursing in Manhattan, NY, NICHE's network has over 680 hospitals and healthcare organizations from the U.S., Canada, Bermuda and Singapore.

"This award underscores South Nassau's commitment to our older patients, which comprise a significant percentage of our overall patient population. They often have special needs that our staff are trained to recognize and address," said Richard J. Murphy, South Nassau's President & CEO. "I congratulate our nursing leadership and staff for winning this recognition and for their dedication to our elder population."

"NICHE designation demonstrates that we will be and we are dedicated to meeting the unique medical care our elder patients require," said Sue Penque, PhD, RN, CNP, chief nursing officer and senior vice president of Patient Care Services at South Nassau. "Like the many other prestigious designations that South Nassau holds, it is emblematic of our enduring drive to improve the quality of care patients receive regardless of their age."

As a NICHE designated hospital, South Nassau will serve as an incubator of evidence-based, interdisciplinary advancements in care for elder patients. It has also adopted a new model of practice known as ACE (Acute Care for Elders) to prevent functional decline of elders over the age of 70 while they recover in the hospital. This is all done within the context of the patient's ethical, moral and religious values –making the care more personalized and compassionate.

The nationally recognized model of care has proven to significantly improve clinical outcomes by improving the elderly patient's ability to function upon discharge, therefore reducing the need for transfers to nursing homes or rehabilitation hospitals. The guiding principle of ACE is to maintain the physical and psychosocial needs of the elder patient, keeping them engaged and moving around early and often to help prevent complications associated with immobility and delirium.

South Nassau's dedicated geriatric (elder) and palliative care program is an essential component of ACE as well as the NICHE designation. The program focuses on maintaining and optimizing the overall quality of life of elder patients as they recover in the hospital by them with the medical, physical, emotional, social and spiritual care they require.

The NICHE recognition is the second major award for South Nassau's nursing staff. In 2015, South Nassau won Magnet® designation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. The Magnet award is given to a select number of hospitals recognized for overall, outstanding nursing care.
