Santa Barbara Restaurateur Joins with Local Aficionado to Open New Downtown Wine Store

Santa Barbara, CA, April 11, 2017 --(PR.com)-- Savoy Café founder/owner Paul Shields has announced a new retail venture, and is joining with a long-time Santa Barbara wine seller to create a vibrant, stylish store in downtown Santa Barbara.

“We’ll employ our established trademark for the new shop: Savoy Wines, Santa Barbara,” commented Mr. Shields, owner and operator of both businesses. “Our aim is to extend the level of customer service and variety that our guests enjoy at the café, and sell wine with a similar commitment to selection, quality and friendly guidance.”

Joining him will be Bob Wesley, who has established himself as a trusted central coast wine retailer. He’s worked for the last twenty years at two high-profile stores, Lazy Acres and The Winehound, an establishment that was voted best wine shop in Santa Barbara since its initial year of operation in 2008.

“We were fortunate to discover an ideal location downtown, with plenty of space and design features, along with a Santa Barbara outlier: Sensible parking,” stated Mr. Wesley, who will be the wine buyer and also manage the shop. “This is an exceptional opportunity to work with Paul again, after our concurrent, lengthy tenures at Lazy Acres.”

Wesley adds that, “Paul’s success at Savoy Café and his burgeoning obsession with wine, along with my own mania for fermented grape juice, provide an ideal foundation for creating a new, and we feel, remarkably welcoming, well-stocked shop.” The location will be at 18 West Anapamu Street, a site previously held by Kernohan’s Toys and Crispin Leather, in a building that has been part of the downtown Santa Barbara scene since 1902.

The duo’s philosophy is to work with myriad purveyors and offer the choicest selection of Santa Barbara County wines in the city, as well as provide an eclectic offering of imports, focusing on France, Italy and Spain.

Value will always be an integral part of the operation. “We’ll sneak in some Aussie, Greek and Macedonian wines as well,” noted Mr. Shields, who added, “Bob and I both feel that selectivity, great value and honest advice are inherent to the business, and if you ever hear us using overtly flowery adjectives or attempting to upsell, just scoff and holler at us!”

Savoy Wines is expected to open its doors in May, 2017.
