Baton Rouge, LA, May 08, 2017 --(PR.com)-- May 20, 2017 from 10:00am to 2:00pm will mark the fourth year of the annual Red Wig Walk. The Red Wig Walk raises awareness for HIV prevention, treatment, and support services in the Baton Rouge area. The walk is in the heart of Downtown Baton Rouge with the gathering point being on the Downtown Riverfront (301 South River Road). Food, music, prizes, information, and a whole lot more are in store. Registration is only $10 and includes admission, a swag bag, light breakfast, lunch, live entertainment and powerful testimonials. In 2015, Baton Rouge ranked 2nd in the nation for HIV diagnoses rates among large metro areas. Furthermore, 84% of new HIV diagnoses in Baton Rouge were in East Baton Rouge Parish. Even more alarmingly, 85% of new HIV diagnoses in Baton Rouge were among African Americans. The Red Wig Walk brings awareness to this HIV epidemic and provides education as well as screenings to help stem the tide of HIV/AIDS and other health issues in our community. Metro Health, established since 1992 and a component of the Baton Rouge Black Alcoholism Council, provides street outreach and community education concerning the consequences of substance abuse and risky sexual behavior. The mission of Metro Health is to develop and implement strategies to reduce the transmission of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections through education, counseling, street outreach, testing, community level interventions, and prevention services aimed at decreasing risky behaviors. Metro Health provides a range of services including youth and peer intervention programs, STI testing, and housing assistance to HIV positive individuals.
