Challenges and Goals: The Future of Active Protection Systems

London, United Kingdom, July 24, 2017 --(PR.com)-- As the threat to the armoured vehicle becomes more complex and advanced, there is now a need across many leading defence forces to focus on Active Protection Systems as a means of ensuring vehicle survivability.

Taking place on November 14th and building on the fruitful discussion of active protection systems (APS) at last year’s Future Armoured Vehicle’s Survivability 2016, SMi presents a focus day exclusively dedicated to this important capability. This pre-conference focus day will be an examination of the current operational environment indicates that future manoeuvre forces must be prepared to fight and win in an increasingly high threat environment.

Drawing on the experience and recent activities of leading programme managers from the armed forces and national defence research, the meeting will aim to deliberate national efforts to integrate APS into existing fleets, the architectures necessary to support integration, efforts to ensure system safety, STANAG 4686 standardisation and much more.

Importantly, the meeting will guarantee the support of technical experts from the leading solution providers, covering the latest hard/soft kill systems, sensors, data processing, munitions and countermeasures. The focus day will feature technical briefings from the UK, US Army, USMC, Norway, Sweden, Israel, The Netherlands and IMI. Below are a few key presentations.

Speaking at the pre-conference focus day is DSTL’s Principal Vetronics Engineer, Platform Systems Division, Mr. Richard Hooper, who will review APS research and developments in the UK, discuss the UK Active Modular Integrated Protection System (MIPS), and develop architecture standards that support development and integration of new technologies.

United States Army Associate Director of Ground Vehicle Survivability & Protection, TARDEC, Mr Jeff Koshko, will provide a view into the future of survivability and protection, specifically driving requirements. Koshko will also discuss APS as a first step towards future protection, technology progression, and gaps and opportunities within protection systems.

Czech Military Research Institute’s Dr. Stanislav Rolc, Chief of Materials Engineering Division and Active Protection Lead, will provide an overview of the EFA system and sub-systems evolution. He will further discuss the requirements for enhanced protection of the Pandur II combat vehicle from RPGs and ATGMs. Dr. Rolc will then speak about the Czech testing of the system in keeping STANAG 4686 as well as the challenges and findings from the evaluation.

Following the Active Protection Systems focus day will be the main conference which will take place on the 15th & 16th November. Future Armoured Vehicles Survivability aims to deliver a strong focus on the relationship between current requirements, emerging technologies and how these might be leveraged to enhance force protection. As well as hearing the perspectives of senior programme managers from procurement and future land requirements, the meeting aims to ensure thorough participation from the leading solution providers currently at the forefront of innovation in the survivability space.
