Election 2008 Goes Geek

Using new media and social networking a blog kept in a small New York town for over a year has been playing a role in the 2008 election.

Rochester, NY, March 05, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Since November 2006 electiongeek.com has been keeping an eye on the national election, growing from a site with just a few thousand hits in its first year to over 200,000 unique visitors since January 2008 alone. Operated from a suburb of Rochester, NY the site is showing how the power of new media can let someone in a small town can play a role in national events.

“When I first registered the domain, I figured I was entering a pretty small niche,” said Jeff Commaroto the sites creator “but with the overwhelming interest in the this years election, Web sites devoted to the campaign seem be turning up all over and seem to be doing very well.”

To stay on top of the news Jeff starts his day collecting stories from the previous night, participating in social networks and connecting with people around the country through online tools. The use of new technology often gives the site an edge in beating more established Web pages and media outlets to breaking news.

What sets Election Geek apart from many political blogs is its non-partisan focus. Jeff gives no endorsements, no preferential treatment, just an honest look at who is winning and losing and what it means for the campaigns.

“I certainly have my own view of politics but it’s anything goes on the site. I receive mail and comments saying I am too liberal, others saying I am too conservative, to me that means I am doing something right and I believe that is the secret to the blog’s success.”

In addition to modern politics Jeff says the site will ultimately have a focus on historic elections. “I would one day like to create a space where everything there is to know about election history is online in one easy to use place.”
