Heartbroken Fans Refuse to be Silenced in Response to Show's Cancellation

Fans of lesbian show decide to honor it by starting charity drive for The Trevor Project, a 24/7 suicide hotline for gay and questioning youth.

Houston, TX, April 09, 2008 --(PR.com)-- On February 27, The-N, a Viacom owned network, announced the cancellation of its groundbreaking series, South of Nowhere. South of Nowhere, a two-time GLAAD nominee for Best Dramatic Series, features a lesbian relationship between its two main characters, high school students, Spencer and Ashley (known to diehard fans as Spashley).

Five fans, heartbroken over the cancellation, came up with a few unique ways to honor their show. The first thing they did was set up a fan tribute site, www.SpashleyU.com. Amy Trombetta, one of the 5 co-founders, is proud of what they’ve done. “Our main goal with the site was to help bring in new fans and catch them up with Spashley with clips detailing the evolution of their relationship. And it’s great for current fans as well, because we get to relive our favorite scenes.”

Two weeks and visitors from 59 countries later, www.SpashleyU.com is entering Phase 2 of their tribute. They will be launching a fundraising campaign on April 18 for The Trevor Project, a toll free 24/7 crisis and suicide hotline for GLBT teens. It serves as an outlet for GLBT teens who are struggling with their sexual identity, the same teens who are fans of South Of Nowhere. Celeste Rotonda, another co-founder, says, “We will be raising funds for the Trevor Project as we find it fitting to pay tribute to this show by giving back in its name to the community that it gave voice to.” Donors will receive wristbands which will have the Trevor Hotline number, as well as the campaign tagline, Don’t Silence Us. Spashley is Love.
