Seattle, WA, August 03, 2008 --(
PR.com)-- Recognizing that India's growing population of street children deserve an opportunity to escape the poverty of the slums where they live, The Literacy Site is working with the Indian charity Baal Dan to provide funding for their education at the Loreto Sealdah School located in Kolkata (Calcutta), India.
The Loreto Sealdah School waives tuition for many motivated children from the slums of Kolkata. Keeping the children in the program through tracking, regular progress visits, and motivational counseling, and measuring success by observing the children's attendance and development, the school is able to remove some of the barriers to education that children in need face. But the children still need uniforms, books, supplies, and money for school fees; items that are beyond their families’ means.
Through the purchase of The Literacy Site’s Gift That Gives More™, the giftgiver can chose to underwrite one month ($25.00) or one year ($300.00) of school fees, uniforms, and books for a child in need attending the Loreto Sealdah. The school itself offers free or subsidized tuition and two hot meals per day for the children.
As with The Literacy Site’s other Gifts That Give More™, 100% of the money donated is passed to the charity as described on the Gift’s web page.
More About The Literacy Site
The Literacy Site was founded to help promote literacy among children in recognition of the fact that making books a part of a child's life is the best way to encourage the love of reading, and that literacy is key in breaking the poverty cycle.
To fulfill its mission, The Literacy Site raises funds for charities through three important channels: the company’s innovative Click to Give™ program, direct donations through such site programs as Gifts That Give More™, and contributions paid for by items sold through The Literacy Site’s store.
The Click to Give™ program on the site’s homepage (www.theliteracysite.com) is paid for by advertisers and 100% of this ad revenue goes directly to support the work of the charities listed on the site. In 2007, visitor clicks provided 307,568 books to children in need. These books were distributed by The Literacy Site’s charity partners First Book and Room to Read.
The totals of the 2008 Click to Give™ program are posted on The Literacy Site’s results page and are updated daily.
