)-- Joe MacDonald
has joined DLR Group to lead a dedicated Research & Development Studio within the firm. MacDonald will support current work while developing a platform for research geared toward finding new practices, processes, and materials to advance integrated design, project delivery, and building performance for owners and users.
A formal R&D Studio at DLR Group is a focused investment by the firm in primary research to advance the disciplines of architecture, engineering, and interiors, and to investigate the boundary of design innovation. The impact of DLR Group’s R&D work will ultimately be conveyed through original design innovation impacting all areas of practice and further elevate the firm’s culture of design.
“The research agenda itself was developed to better serve the needs of clients within our core markets,” said DLR Group Global Design Leader Steven McKay
. “The long-term vision for this enterprise is to elevate the delivery of integrated design and sustainability in all our markets. In some cases this will involve clients and other organizations as partners. In others, we’ll bring our own ideas and inventions to them. But it’s all based on emerging work within the firm.”
Around the globe the design industry is applying new architectural processes that blur the traditional boundaries between research and practice. DLR Group’s aim includes rigorous investigation of new technologies, materials, and methodologies to influence and elevate the ability of design teams to deliver sustainable, high performance buildings.
“I’ve enjoyed a view of DLR Group’s practice for a period of time now, admiring this firm’s design culture and the diverse work of our design teams,” said MacDonald. “It will be a tremendous experience to advance a new research and development agenda alongside a community of like-minded design professionals. The prospect of generating new forms and new typologies of work and generating new business for DLR Group is an exciting challenge.”
Prior to joining DLR Group, MacDonald was founding principal of the research based firm Urban A&O in New York. He also served as an Associate Professor in the Department of Architecture at Harvard University Graduate School of Design from 2000 to 2010. MacDonald has been awarded several faculty grants for his research on social patterns within dense urban environments including speculative mapping for Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Tokyo. His work has been widely exhibited and published.
