Maui Film Festival—Event Wrap-Up and Starz Audience Awards

Constellation of Stars Shines & Starz Audience Awards, Announced as Maui Film Festival Attendance Soars

Paia, HI, June 22, 2005 --(PR.com)-- As Festival Director Barry Rivers noted, after he personally showed the door to a few people who tried to use fake Festival Galaxy Passes to pass themselves off as writers for Vanity Fair at the 2005 Maui Film Festival VVIP Party at Spago at the Four Seasons Resort on Maui, “Compliments come in all shapes and sizes. This was one of the stranger ones. I guess these guys must’ve taken the festival’s tongue-in-cheek Cannes. Sundance. Toronto. Maui. bumper sticker a little too seriously.”

Or Not.

Because in a year when the Maui Film Festival announced that attendance this year was up approximately 10% to just over 22,000 and that more people than ever before, including: Jake Gyllenhaal, William H. Macy, Mike Myers, Helen Hunt, the Wilson Brothers—Owen, Luke and Andrew, and living legends of surfing Larid Hamilton and Dave Kalama were honored at the event, these faux writers may have just been ahead of the high surf advisory that is sure to be in place as the 2006 Maui Film Festival unspools in mid-June of next year.

The festival also announced this year’s Starz Audience Award winners at the event’s Cosmic Closing Night Party. These include:

BEST FEATURE
Howl's Moving Castle

BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE
March of the Penguins

BEST SHORT
Our Time Is Up

BEST DOCUMENTARY SHORT
All Aboard the Crazy Train

BEST ANIMATED SHORT
Joe Blow

Other Films that finished near the top in this year's Starz Audience Award balloting at the 2005 Maui Film Festival included: Grizzly Man, Hustle & Flow, I Know I'm Not Alone, The Land Has Eyes, Kamakakehau: Precious Gift, Mad Hot Ballroom, The Marilyn Hotchkiss Ballroom Dancing and Charm School, My Summer of Love, Ocean Odyssey, Pulse: A Stomp Odyssey, The Real Dirt on Farmer John, Suzuki Speaks, Rize, Trudell, The Wendell Baker Story and Waiting to Inhale.
