Kathy Kay Joins The Special Event Company as Senior Program Manager

Strategic Event and Meeting Management Company Welcomes Event Planning Professional with Over 10 Years Experience

Cary, NC, July 03, 2014 --(PR.com)-- The Special Event Company, a strategic event and meeting management company, has announced that Kathy Kay has joined the firm as senior program manager. In her role, Kay is responsible for serving as project manager on standing events such as the Academic Event Professional (AEP) Conference, providing event planning strategic direction and assessing the needs of the company as it grows and expands.

Kay earned a Bachelor of Arts in history and a master’s degree in art history from the University of Florida. She also holds an associate degree in culinary technology from Alamance Community College in Graham, N.C. Kay lived in various locations across the United States as well as in Rome, Italy for four years before moving to Durham, N.C.

Prior to beginning her career in event planning, Kay worked as a member of the inaugural curatorial staff for the opening of the Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art at the University of Florida from 1990 until 1991. From there, she moved to the Duke University Museum of Art and finished out her tenure in the museum field as assistant curator of Collections and Special Projects at the Mint Museum of Art in Charlotte, N.C. Kay then served as production manager and editor for the Carolina Academic Press in Durham before pursuing her culinary degree. She served as the first catering director for Mad Hatter’s Café and Bakeshop in Durham before venturing into event planning.

Kay’s event planning career includes positions at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and the Pratt School of Engineering at Duke University. During her seven-year tenure as the director of special events at Duke University, she coordinated and produced a wide variety of meetings, lectures, conferences, and special events for the Engineering Dean’s Office and the Office of Development.
