SGS Announces New Reformulation of Chemicals Under California Prop 65

Proposition 65 (Prop 65) is the "Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986," a ballot initiative passed overwhelmingly by California residents in 1986. Since its enactment, there have been numerous lawsuits which resulted in the reduction of carcinogenic and reproductive chemicals by reformulations of consumer products containing such chemicals (1).

Hong Kong, China, September 29, 2014 --(PR.com)-- Prop 65 is now over 25 years old and has been effective in reducing exposures to toxic chemicals. Of the 850 or so listed chemicals, lead-containing consumer products have been consistently targeted over the years (2). In the last few years, phthalates (3) and flame retardants (4) have also been consistently targeted in consumer products.

Since the beginning of 2014, a number of Prop 65 settlements have been reached that require the reformulation of flame retardants, lead, phthalates and other chemicals in a wide range of products, including but not limited to, flasks, headphone cords, outdoor products, paint products, pet products, products containing foam and polyurethane foam, products with PVC / vinyl covers, stationery items and synthetic leather products.

Highlights of these settlements are summarized in Table 1 (http://newsletter.sgs.com/eNewsletterPro/uploadedimages/000006/sgs-safeguards-15014-california-prop-65-reformulation-chemicals-consumer-prodcuts-a4-en-14.pdf) within the latest SafeGuards bulletin.
