Tanga UWASA Receives ISO 9001:2015 Certification from SGS

SGS has awarded Tanga Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (Tanga UWASA) ISO 9001:2015 certification, making it the first organization in Tanzania to be ISO 9001:2015 certified by SGS.

Geneva, Switzerland, January 22, 2017 --(PR.com)-- Tanga UWASA’s managing director, Eng. Joshua Mgeyekewa, recently told the media that the authority’s ISO accreditation status falls in line with its vision of becoming a world-class customer focused water and sanitation utility, and demonstrates its determination to continually improve and stand out from the competition. At an awards event held by Tanga UWASA, Eng. Mgeyekwa praised the authority for achieving certification after fulfilling the criteria for complying with international standards for the quality of service delivery.

“I am very proud of the achievements attained by the authority since its inauguration in 1998,” says Eng. Mgeyekwa. “We are now providing safe and clean water to the city population for 23 hours a day,” In addition to being ISO 9001:2015 certified, Tanga UWASA was voted Best Water Utility Company by Tanzania’s Energy and Water Utilities Authority (EWURA) for three years in a row.

Implementing ISO 9001, the flagship Quality Management Systems standard of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), has significantly improved Tanga UWASA’s ability to meet and exceed customer expectations. The authority has increased water coverage by making use of advancements in technology and is now using mobile money platforms, such as Vodacom MPESA and Tigo PESA, to simplify the bill payment process.

Many organizations in Tanzania are showing a desire to comply with ISO requirements, with the aim of instilling a standards-based culture into their day to day activities. With globalization creating an urgent need to adapt to a world of fast-changing regulations, rapidly advancing technology and dynamic markets, local businesses understand that they must raise their standards.

Over the years, ISO standards have enabled businesses in Tanzania to:

Create healthy work environments
Gain access to new markets
Reduce environmental impact
Promote innovative technological advances
Increase their value through the sharing of good management and conformity assessment practices

ISO 9001 has enabled some of the largest organizations in Tanzania to stand out from the competition by meeting the highest standards of quality and customer satisfaction. ISO 14001, ISO’s environmental management system standard, has also been adopted by a number of organizations to help reduce the environmental impact of daily operations.
