National Innovation Experts to Lead Economic Roundtable on Innovation Economics

Raleigh, NC, April 19, 2008 --(PR.com)-- The Capital Formation Institute, a Washington DC-based economic research and advocacy group for innovation economics, announced today the line up of experts who will lead the April 22, 2008, national roundtable discussion on innovation tools to drive community economic development.

“These 3 national leaders have dedicated their professional careers to helping technology and innovation entrepreneurs start successful ventures,” said Dan Loague, Executive Director of CFI. “We are honored to have them as speakers.”

Chris Gibbons, Director of Business/Industry Affairs, the program leader in Littleton for 19 years, will describe how innovation drives success in jobs creation and city revenue growth. The Littleton, Colorado program is first in the nation in building communities through innovation-based economic development.

From 1990 to 2005 the number of jobs in Littleton more than doubled from 15,000 to 34,000, and sales tax revenues more than tripled from $6 to $19 million. The City accomplished this growth without recruiting even a single industry, and without offering one cent in incentives or tax rebates.

Also leading the discussion on April 22 will be Roger Akers, the CEO of Akers Capital, a California-based venture capital firm, and Jon Gregory, CEO of Golden Capital Network, a California non-profit networking, training and consulting group that fosters growth entrepreneurship and early stage investing as an engine for regional economic growth.

“In CFI’s first national roundtable on April 10, more than two dozen development professionals from across the nation agreed that innovation economic development is the right focus to solve America’s economic problems,” said Loague. “However, they expressed frustration at the lack of economic tools and management networks needed to facilitate this approach to job creation.”

Tom Vass, President of The Private Capital Market, Inc., a global due diligence platform for companies raising capital, and the author of Predicting Technology, said he also became aware during the first call how the term innovation economics is used by the traditional economic development community.

"I was surprised that the term innovation economics already had an interpretation that meant building a new building to recruit a company to a community," said Vass, one of the moderators of the national discussion.

"We need to establish a common language that innovation economics is about deal flow and new venture creation," he added.

Addressing these concerns, CFI’s second national roundtable will feature details of how successful programs operate and show tools that can be applied effectively in other regions. “CFI is leading this series of national discussions to help build a network of professionals, expand expert resources, build best practices and begin to lay the foundation for innovation economics as the national paradigm of economic growth,” said Loague.

The April 22, 2008, national roundtable is open to the public and free, but pre-registration is recommended. To participate, register at the CFI website, www.cfi-institute.org.
