FOLO’s Respite Awareness Campaign is designed to provide caregivers with opportunities for finding resources and helping them learn to better identify their needs. The campaign’s motto--‘ Caregivers are our everyday heroes. Help them be strong. Discover Respite.’-- embraces the following objectives:
• Promote awareness and compassion toward caregiving issues at home, work and in daily activities.
• Encourage partnerships among industry, media and the public to endorse strategies and awareness of caregiving and the need for respite.
• Empower the caregivers you know to seek family, community or professional assistance as caregiving responsibilities mount.

Overwhelmed with caring for loved ones, caregivers are often unable to recognize caregiver burnout. Respite, a brief period of rest and recovery is vital to caregivers. Most people are not familiar with the term respite-care and the importance of taking care of the caregiver’s needs. “Caregivers work from their heart, and it is often a physically and emotionally demanding role,” said Cantwell. “Bringing Respite Awareness to the public’s attention is the first step in helping families understand that caregiving works best when all involved are considered appropriately. People are very committed to active participation in all aspects of their families’ lives. When one or more members of a family need extraordinary care, there typically is one member–by design or default– who becomes leader or caregiver. FOLO’s goal is to provide broad support by offering strategies and resources in print and online with their magazine, website and e-newsletter. Looking forward, it is their plan to place a greater emphasis on the importance of respite care.” In addition to the upcoming caregiver event, a continuing education course is planned for January ’09, which will focus on perspectives in better assessing client’s needs. The course is accredited to provide Social Workers, LNHA,CALA and RN’s with 2.5 hours of continuing education.
