Laboratory Testing Inc. Implements Improved Surface Plate Calibration Services
Laboratory Testing Inc. of PA has implemented a computerized surface plate calibration system with leveling feet to ensure reliable surface evaluation and provide customers with detailed diagrams and measurements explaining surface plate wear and deviation from the standard.
Surface plates wear with use and must be properly maintained to ensure continued precision measurement. Routine calibration to measure surface flatness and repeatability, followed by resurfacing to restore flatness within grade guidelines, will maintain the accuracy of a surface plate. LTI’s new calibration system includes these steps, as well as cleaning and lightly polishing the plate. A calibration certification is provided showing “as found” and “as left” conditions, standard requirements and all calibration results.

The chemistry lab also analyzes powdered metals, ores, ferroalloys, composites, ceramics, and aerospace and nuclear materials. LTI has the capabilities to test metals and other materials for strength and durability, flaws and defects and to determine composition and susceptibility to corrosion. Failure investigations are performed to determine the root cause of a failure in a product or part designed to operate under specific service conditions. The testing area also inspects welds for provides welder and procedure qualification. LTI's Machine Shop prepares test specimens for mechanical testing, including tensile and stress rupture tests. All machining is performed using computerized numerical control (CNC) equipment in accordance with ASTM A-370, ASTM E-8 or ASTM E-23 requirements and customer specifications.
