Portable Storage a Boon for Black Friday Retailers

The National Portable Storage Association encourages retailers to use in-store square footage for merchandising – and portable storage for back stock – during a critical holiday shopping season.

Kansas City, MO, November 28, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Black Friday – and Cyber Monday that follows just a few days later – only rolls around once a year. But portable storage containers help retailers extend their inventory space from January to December.

"We hear a lot about Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but we don't always hear about the infrastructure that makes it possible for some retailers to stock up for the holiday shopping season rush," said John Finnessy, CMP, Executive Director of the National Portable Storage Association, or NPSA, a nonprofit membership association dedicated to the advancement of the portable storage industry. "Portable storage units are part of that infrastructure."

Portable storage units can offer retailers additional room on site to store merchandise that might otherwise take up space on the showroom floor. Every inch of retail space is important in a down economy. According to National Retail Federation's 2008 Holiday Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey, U.S. consumers plan to spend an average of $832.36 on holiday-related shopping, up a paltry 1.9 percent over last year's $816.69. This represents the lowest increase in planned consumer spending since the survey began in 2002.

"Retailers are going into this holiday season with their eyes wide open, knowing that savings and promotions will be the main incentive for shoppers," said NRF President and CEO Tracy Mullin. "No one is canceling Christmas because money is tight, but consumers will be sticking to their budgets and looking for good deals when deciding where to spend this holiday season."

Though shoppers choose to visit stores for different reasons, consumers say one factor will play the biggest role in buying decisions this year: price. That means retailers who have purchased from wholesalers at deep discounts and large volumes may bode well this season. Portable storage gives retailers the flexibility they need space-wise to make those orders and keep the stock on hand for quick restocking.

"Portable storage isn't just for cargo anymore. It's for cargo pants, shoes, electronics, and other merchandise retailers need to store," said NPSA Operations Manager Joel Rathbone. "With air conditioned and secured portable storage units, retailers can be assured that their merchandise is safe and sound and in good quality condition during this critical fourth quarter."
