Portable Storage Helps Secure Corporate Information

The National Portable Storage Association offers security tips for corporate information.

Kansas City, MO, December 11, 2008 --(PR.com)-- There are two types of portable storage – the kind that pose great risk to corporate information and the kind that help secure corporate information.

"Portable storage containers are perfect for on-site records storage," said John Finnessy, CMP, Executive Director of the National Portable Storage Association, or NPSA, a nonprofit membership association dedicated to the advancement of the portable storage industry. "For industries that have to comply with state and federal documentation laws, portable storage offers a safe and secure alternative to more costly solutions."

News headlines about the dangers of portable storage devices, also known as USB sticks, continue to emerge. In September, for example, a Cisco global security study revealed the loss of corporate information by employees is a leading security concern. Almost one in four (22 percent) employees carry corporate data on portable storage devices outside of the office.

In November, Trend Micro reported a spike in computer infections with viruses by way of a portable storage device. The security firm also reported 53.8 percent of newly detected computer viruses are programmed to spread via portable storage devices. Unlike these floppy disk alternatives, however, portable storage containers are helping companies keep their data safe and secure.

Portable storage containers can be secured in many ways, including installing security bars on the windows from the inside or outside, using lock boxes, or using tamper-proof crossbar doors to deter thieves. For added security, companies can also equip portable storage units with the same ADT security systems used to secure public and private facilities. The bottom line: Portable storage containers are a less expensive solution to storing records in an office building, and more convenient than traditional self-storage while also maintaining the security companies need to stay in compliance with government regulations.
