CT 498 B Misting Lube - Not just another “Mist” Opportunity

Misting Lube CT 498-B increased the tool life of Haworth Ludington by up to 50%. Overall, the operators are much more pleased with all aspects of the CT 498-B. Benefits: 1) Reduction of dermatitis on operator’s hands and arms. 2) Reduced handling of the parts manufactured. 3) Saved 50% tool life/Lower use cost.

Elkhorn, WI, April 02, 2009 --(PR.com)-- For over 50 years Haworth Ludington has been a manufacturer of custom office furniture in Western Michigan. They pride themselves on their ability to provide environmentally friendly office configurations that meet their customer’s specific needs. Like all manufacturing firms today, Haworth was looking for an opportunity to reduce its operation costs while maintaining a healthy and safe environment for their work force.

Managers at Haworth Ludington identified an operation in their manufacturing process that had room for improvement. They were using a very expensive misting lube in a number of their manufacturing operations. They were importing a “misting lube” from Italy that was very expensive to run ($250.00 a gallon) in their Emmigi Milling machines. Replacing the expensive “misting lube” became the primary focus of their cost saving initiative.

Program Description:

Haworth utilizes two (2) Emmigi machines for drilling, tapping, milling, etc on aluminum extrusions. The aluminum extrusions are structural pieces used in wall systems and office furniture applications which vary in size and density. The Emmigi machining centers operate at very high speed and are only meant to be used with misting lubes. As stated above, Haworth used a misting lube that was very expensive. In an effort to find a less expensive alternative, Haworth trialed two misting lubes without much success (lack of lubricity and dermatitis issues).

Chemtool Incorporated was providing metalworking fluids to Haworth Kentwood Flooring in Grand Rapids, a sister company of Haworth Ludington. Because of their successes at Kentwood, Chemtool Incorporated was invited to trail a product, CT 498 B Misting Lube at Haworth. The product was selected over a variety of other Chemtool misting lubes because CT 498 B offered a low viscosity level while still being able to supply excellent cooling for the tool. Chemtool believed that CT 498 B would provide equal if not superior lubrication at a price point that would less than what Haworth was currently paying.

During the trial, operators immediately noticed that the CT 498-B cooled the aluminum extrusions at a much quicker level than the incumbent lube. The manufactured piece was so cool in fact, that the operators could actually pick up the machined parts with their bare hands immediately. Whereas in the past, machined parts would be so hot that operators had to wait for them to cool, and even then, they had to be handled with gloves.

The operators also noticed that there was very little mist coming out of the machine after its cycle was complete. As a result of the mist reduction, operators have not experienced any dermatitis issues since the conversion.

It was also observed that the CT 498-B increased the tool life by up to 50%. Overall, the operators are much more pleased with all aspects of the CT 498-B.

Benefits:

1) Reduction of dermatitis on operator’s hands and arms
2) Reduced handling of the parts manufactured
3) Saved 50% tool life/Lower use cost
