Butterball, LLC Receives Plant of the Year Designation

Refrigerated & Frozen Foods Magazine Honors Mt. Olive Location

Raleigh, NC, June 06, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Butterball, LLC, the largest turkey producer in the United States, has been recognized as the 2008 Plant of the Year, in the Meat, Poultry & Seafood division, by Refrigerated & Frozen Foods magazine.

The distinction honors processing facilities that have shown exemplary performance across several categories, including worker and food safety, community involvement, environmental initiatives and innovation. Most recently, Butterball’s Mt. Olive complex achieved Rising Star Status from North Carolina’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) – a distinction that commemorates worksites that serve as superior examples for workplace health and safety.

“Achieving this status has been a vision of the leadership group at Butterball and this facility for several years,” says Complex Manager, Phil Paulk. “Butterball has always placed associate welfare at the forefront of all that we do. It took every associate in the plant — both hourly and salary — working together, focused on and committed to safety to achieve this recognition.”

Butterball’s Mt. Olive facility employs more than 2,000 hourly associates with an additional 200 management and support staff. Each week, the location produces 2.5 million pounds of fully cooked products.

As part of Mt. Olive’s operational goals, continuous learning as well as extensive sustainability efforts are implemented at all plant levels. The management team is required to complete 40 to 80 hours of leadership training annually while plant associates participate in supervisor apprentice and college reimbursement programs. The facility has also implemented a water conservation and recycling system that saves more than 91 million gallons of water per year.

“What truly differentiates us as a special facility is the people that we employ,” Paulk says. “It is the chemistry amongst our leadership and associates that have enabled us to continue to grow our customer base and lead our industry in product innovation.”
